Sport Psychology
Why train your brain?

Why put effort and energy into developing mental skills? The most
compelling reason I can offer is this: you are doing it anyway.
Everyday you are giving yourself certain messages about what kind
of athlete you are and what you’re capable of. Everyday you
are rehearsing responses to stress, mistakes, anxiety and adversity.
You can call this your “default” program. Everyday it
is reinforced as it determines how you manage your experiences.
You have the choice to leave this program running as is, or to
begin to begin the reprogramming process. Start by knowing your
existing program. How does it operate? Where is it effective and
not effective? Watch long enough and you will know where you want
to make changes. Since your mind will not deliver a “your
mind has performed an illegal operation” notice, you’ll
have to develop your own virus software.
So think about this: as far as I know most of you are taking your
brains to your sport each day (ignore what coaches say when they’re
having a bad day). So you have a choice, pay attention to what that
mind of yours is doing and not doing for you or don’t- let
it play unsupervised.
